Panic Disorder

Just like you, thousands and thousands of others suffer from panic attacks. Does the following sound familiar?

Lexie felt as if she was having a heart attack. As she was driving she suddenly began shaking and trembling, and the pain in her chest was unbearable. She felt nauseous and had pins and needles in her arms. Somehow she managed to get to the ER where the doctors performed a complete range of tests, all of which came back normal. The doctor diagnosed that she had suffered a panic attack.

If you have been diagnosed with panic disorder it is important to understand that you are not alone. According to the National Institute of Health, there are indeed thousands and thousands of people who are suffering from the disorder today.

Physical symptoms of panic attacks-

Panic attack symptoms may include shortness of breath, heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, difficulty breathing, tingling or numbness in the fingers, face, or toes, stomach aches, and headaches.
There may also be symptoms such as the fear that you are losing your mind, and feeling disassociated with your surroundings, as if you are viewing a movie.

Anxiety disorders including panic attacks have now become so prevalent that there are now thousands of people seeking treatment for their anxiety.
Treatments usually involve psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or medication. Alternative treatments like meditation and relaxation therapy are often used to help relax the body and relieve anxiety.

It is not uncommon for people to spend many months having therapy sessions to overcome their panic attacks. Unfortunately, very often these people experience only a minor improvement in their anxiety symptoms. Prescribed medications often have nasty side effects, but patients must keep taking them otherwise the panic attacks start again.
